Shomi launched on November 4, 2014. It is a Canadian subscription video on demand service that is jointly owned by Rogers and Shaw, both of which are leading communications companies specializing in cell phone, internet and cable TV services. At the time of its launch, Shomi had a library of 11 000 hours of TV shows and about 1 200 movies.
The service was originally only available as an addition to cable services provided by Rogers or Shaw, but can now be subscribed to as a service on its own through its website or apps, making it available throughout Canada.
The main feature that sets Shomi apart from its competitors is its manually curated categories which allows subscribers to choose what they want to see from the categories available, as opposed to the algorithmic categorization competitors use, which records a subscribers viewing habits and then suggests programs or movies you might like.
