Virgin Mobile: problems and outages in real time

Virgin Mobile is a company that primarily sells prepaid wireless services, but also offers plans and internet services in Colombia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Chile, Russia, France, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Poland, South Africa, and Mexico.

Originally founded by Richard Branson, in 1999, Branson originally owned 85 percent of the companies shares, which are now down to about 15 percent.

Virgin Mobile used to operate Virgin Mobile branded services used in Australia, Singapore, India, Qatar and the United States, and while most of those services still exist, they have been bought out and enfolded into many other companies such as Sprint in the ever-changing telecommunications landscape.

One of the most popular and successful of Virgin Mobiles operations is in Canada. Launched in 2005 as a joint venture between the Virgin Group and BCE Inc. (Formerly Bell Canada Enterprises) it became a wholly-owned company of BCE in 2009 when BCE bought out Virgin Group’s Shares.

Originally offering only pre-paid services, in order to remain competitive in the marketplace, the company began offering postpaid services in Canada in 2008 and currently offers 7 different plans for postpaid use. The cheapest is for $28 a month is you already have your own cellphone and wish to bring it on the Virgin network, which is run by BCE.

At one time Virgin had at least 60 stores in Canada and perhaps a 100 or more small kiosks. However, while the Virgin network in total has over 15 million customers, many of the individual Virgin Mobile stores have closed, either because they replicate Bell’s existing phone company network, as well as the fact that many stores and kiosks are closed to the current COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Bell network which Virgin Mobile Canada uses, covers nearly 99 percent of Canada.

The vast majority of Virgin Mobile Canada users experience no roaming within Canada, and almost all calls within Canada are billed as local calls. Most planes, even those that are pre-paid, allow for extensive or practically unlimited texting, and most allow for a hefty amount of data.

Besides offering phones and phone plans, Virgin Mobile Canada offers discounts for adding services such as Mobile TV, premium voicemail service and even unlimited voice minutes for as little as $25.

Those who want to purchase a phone and get a discount subsidy must sign up for a postpaid data plan. There are 5 data plans beyond the bring your own phone plan. These are Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Diamond Plus.

By signing up for these plans, which are two years in length, customers can save from as few as $250 on a phone all the way to $800. Virtually all of these plans have unlimited data, but the price will rise if you tend to use more data.

No credit checks are required for prepaid phone accounts, but they may apply for those wanting a postpaid phone and plan.

Look for Virgin Mobile to continue to be a player in the wireless business for quite some time as millions move to cellphones but do not have the necessary credit to qualify for the best and most expensive plans.
