U-Haul is a popular American moving company. Leonard Shoen, a former U.S. WWII veteran, founded this great company in 1945.
It might be hard for some to believe that this major American company actually began in a tiny garage in Ridgefield, Washington. Slowly, Shoen expanded his operations to local gas stations. Today, U-Haul has truck rental and trailer rental services all across North America.
In addition to rentals, this company offers tow hitches and self-storage to its customers. Even if you haven’t used U-Haul‘s services, you’re probably familiar with their iconic trucks.
Every single truck has a unique piece of Americana on it. U-Haul is currently a subsidiary of the company AMERCO.

September 16, 2022 – worst experience with uhaul customer service – as in, there was NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. Paid almost $2400 for an alternate vehicle to what was ordered & confirmed + over 3 hours late for picking up at a different location than was ordered to. This caused a ripple effect that we had to pay movers an additional 3 hours of standing around, just waiting for the 20′ truck & a trailer to arrive (instead of pre-ordered 26′ truck). When we were told ‘there is no 26′ vehicle available for you – you can have a 20′ truck’, we said that we are moving a 3 bedroom, 2 level home across a Province & a 20′ would not be enough space, the oh so polite (this is dripping with sarcasm in case you hadn’t figured that out yet) customer service person threatened to cancel the reservation. If we could have gone ANYWHERE else, we would have. Uhaul caused unnecessary stress in an already stressful situation. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY – THEY ARE NOT WORTH THE ANGST THEY INVARIABLY CAUSE – TERRIBLE BUSINESS PRACTISES
How do you get Canadian corporate UHaul personnel to respond to an emailed complaint? Being chastised by facility management for using some of UHaul’s plastic bags when I got fed up providing supplies at my own expense to clean and stock a public bathroom, clean grit off stored posessions from filthy unmaintained facility doors, and scrubbing bird poop off possessions from birds allowed to nest in the facility’s walls and enter units internally, is the final straw. Management wouldn’t even sell me some bags for the purpose of protecting possessions from the state of their facility. Frustrating! My experience is UHaul is a dirty facility. If you expect cleanliness, you’re in the wrong place. When the nails and screw nails scattered on the UHaul grounds by employees and management blowing out rental trucks with a leaf blower eventually puncture my tires, I’m sure I’ll be left paying that bill myself, too. UHaul, please do better and contact customers with legitimate customer service concerns.
At best, moving can be and usually is, A VERY STRESSFUL TIME. Now, if you are really, really into stress piled on top of stress, U-Haul is the way to go. If you are inclined to a full blown coronary, try changing ANYTHING with your reservation. Like getting a larger truck or picking up the truck (and paying for it) a day early. You may as well be on another planet. U-Haul is the POSTER CHILD for how NOT to run a company.
What a horrible experience! Reserved a truck 6 weeks before moving. Called the local franchise in Hanover Ontario 2 weeks before to confirm. She was extremely rude and said it was far too early for the reservation to show up on her screen. Called again the week of and still no confirmation. Finally told I might have to pick up at another location. Moving day arrives….yes it’s a holiday but arrangements were made to pick up the key from a lock box. 2 hours and 4 contacts later still no truck. What a horrible company to deal with. Drive 2 hours to move my daughter home and it’s looking like we will have to come back another day. Disgusting
This experience was the last time I will ever use u – haul . My reservation for a 26 foot truck was made over a month before my move. The notification the day before pick-up told me that I was getting a 20 foot truck at a location 40 kilometers away from the location I requested. When I picked up truck at the Green Bank Ontario location the representative was disorganized and unprofessional. I drove the truck less than 300 kilometers total and was charged for extra kilometers . Total of 631 miles ! I will never forget the abuse from u-haul.
I get a unit for the first month free then because I didn’t get all my stuff in one of the workers said that I could have the other one free for the first month just have it all in one before the end of the month. So now I’m a week here and I come in to get a change of clothes and theres a lock on my door can’t change can’t do anything I’m choked and think they did it because I complaind to corporate

The worse service ever!!! Never use U-haul unless you want to be ripped off.
I was not given a receipt, which they said they sent to my daughter. The quote for the cost was not on the receipt and I was also not told about filling up the truck after use.
Why wasn’t I given a receipt the day I drive off with the truck??? Keys with no receipt???
People have a lot going on when moving, they completely took advantage of that!!
U-haul likes to rip people off!!
I will never use them again and I’ll advise all others to do the same.
I am having great difficulty resolving a dispute with U-Haul over charges for a truck rental. They suggested I do a one-way rental, which I accepted and planned for. A day or two later, U-Haul said that they must alter the price for the rental I was quoted, to approximately twice the cost. This felt very much like bait-and-switch marketing, which is at least immoral if not illegal. Since that time, they are trying their best to ignore my concern and I’m afraid I am having to settle this matter in court.
