Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) is one of the largest Canadian consumers’ cooperatives to sell outdoor clothing and gear. Since this is a consumers’ cooperative, people who want to shop at MEC must become a member of the MEC community. The idea for this cooperative was born in 1971 amongst members of the Varsity Outdoor Club in the University of British Columbia.
