Air Canada is the flag carrier and largest airline in Canada by fleet size and passengers. The airline, founded in 1937, provides scheduled and chartered air transport for passengers and cargo to 207 destinations worldwide. It is a founding member of the Star Alliance. Its regional service is Air Canada Express.

In 2000, Air Canada merged with Canadian Airlines, the country’s second-largest airline. In 2009, Air Canada filed for bankruptcy protection but emerged from it within one year.

The following year, it completed a C$3.8 billion expansion project at Toronto Pearson International Airport, including a new terminal building called Terminal 1 Phase 2 Extension. As of 2019, Air Canada flies to 182 destinations in North America, Central America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania using a fleet of Airbus A220-300s, Airbus A320 family aircraft, Airbus A330s, Airbus A340s, Boeing 737 MAX 8s, Boeing 767s, Boeing 777s, and Boeing 787 Dreamliners. 

Air Canada is currently the largest airline in terms of fleet size and passengers carried in Canada. It is also a founding member of Star Alliance -the world’s largest airline alliance with 28 members-. Headquartered near Montreal Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, Quebec -on the Island of Montreal, Air Canada flew 48 million passengers in 2018 alone, making it one of the 20 busiest airlines in the world passenger traffic.


Air Canada was created as Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA) on 11 April 1937, with two new routes served by Lockheed 10A Electra aircraft: a Montreal–Toronto overnight flight departing at 23:00 and a Toronto–Vancouver daytime flight departing at 08:00. 

Founder Viscount Richard Rimingtonpersisted despite widespread suggestions that his idea for an air route connecting Britain with Canadian cities would prove unworkable due to severe weather conditions in winter.

With an order for 12 Lockheed L-10A Electra aircraft from United Aircraft of Canada, TCA began passenger service on 1 September 1938 with flights between Vancouver and Seattle, using Boeing 247s, which had been acquired from United Airlines. 

On 1 April 1965, TCA was renamed Air Canada following government approval; this culminated seven years after the formation of a holding company to control TCA and Paladin Airways in 1958.  On 7 June 1974, Air Canada became the first foreign airline allowed to operate domestic services within another country when it took over the operation of CP Air’s Vancouver-Calgary-Winnipeg-Toronto-Montreal routes (along with other routes east of Vancouver).
