Toys “R” Us, Inc. was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1948 by Charles P. Lazarus and has since grown to become a top competitor in toy and baby product retail. It started out as Children’s Supermarket, which specialized in baby toys before branching out into older children’s toy retail. Toys “R” Us was acquired by Interstate Department Stores, Inc. in 1966 and merged with its sister company, Children’s Bargain Town USA.
Its current divisions are Toys “R” Us, baby apparel and supply chain Babies “R” Us, and FAO Schwarz, which was the first and oldest toy store in the United States. Toys “R” Us launched its online shopping network in 1996, and the domain names it owns include Toysrus.com, Toys.com, and EToys.com. Toys “R” Us has also experimented with a smaller, holiday-oriented chain called Toys “R” Us Express, opening 90 “Holiday Express” stores in Canada and the United States in 2009, which expanded to 600 in 2010.
Toys “R” Us opened its first international store in Canada in 1984, which marked the beginning of its international expansion. There are currently 875 Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores operating in the United States and its territories, 765 international stores, and more than 245 licensed stores in 37 countries across the globe. Toys “R” Us currently owns and licenses 81 stores across Canada.
